In this new body of work, Stites first offers a lexicon of individual forms based on the common, ubiquitous scissor. Using chalk, ink, graphite and spray paint, each drawing is a graphic sign exploring the sexual, animal, dangerous and comical manifestations of the scissor form.
Larger works take this lexicon combined with other recognizable and non-defined imagery to create a halo of humanity afloat on a large white paper. The uncanny pairing of dream-like imagery with direct observation creates a deceptively simple, pulsating universe. With a tendency to caricature and a grotesque affinity for the absurd, these works mystify as they attempt to define a state of complexity and uncertainty.
