Back of Beyond is an Australian colloquial expression that refers to a point furthest from known lands, past civilization and into the realm of one’s imagination. A stunning group art exhibition titled Back of Beyond, curated by Jane Hart, opens on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at the historic Deering Estate at Cutler. Hart, who is exhibition curator at Hollywood’s Art and Culture Center, is collaborating with the Estate’s exhibition specialist Kim Yantis to present the show.
Participating artists were encouraged to seek inspiration from the Land Down Under, and most importantly, from Jonathan Swift’s literary classic “Gulliver’s Travels.” The book was published in 1726, and is filled with tales of imaginary voyages to uncharted places. Hart specifically wanted the artists to reference Swift’s book not only for the world of fantasy, but also for the message of utopianism and the spirit of adventure that fills each page.
The talented line up of artists accepting the challenge include: TJ Ahearn, Bhakti Baxter, Maryrose Crook (NZ), April Dolkar (NZ), Sebastian Duncan-Portuondo, Liz Ferrer, Shawn Marie Hardy (NZ), Brookhart Jonquil, William Keddell (NZ), Sinisa Kukec, Tracy Moffett (AUS), Kuby Nnamdi, Temisan Okpaku, David Rohn, George Sanchez Calderon, Oliver Sanchez, Onajide Shabaka, Barron Sherer, Misael Soto, Sara Stites, Stephan Tugrul.
The mixed media exhibition represents paintings, sculpture, collage, photography, video and installation works. Hart alluded to a planned performance piece by David Rohn. On exhibit is the video “Love” by internationally acclaimed and award-winning artist Tracy Moffett. Her piece reveals the unique human feeling as it has been presented in the motion pictures.
The highly touted trio of artists Bhakti Baxter, Sinisa Kukec and George Sanchez Calderon are exhibiting, after being featured at the Miami Art Museum’s recent show that highlighted some of South Florida’s best artists.
Back of Beyond is open daily from 10am to 4pm from October 12 through November 12 and is free with Estate admission. The October 16th reception, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm, is free and open to the public.
The theme of the art exhibit was chosen to complement the Deering Estate Foundation’s annual signature fundraising event Wine on Harvest Moon presented by South BMW. The evening “Aussies, Kiwis and Didgeridoos” on Saturday, October 19, features the fine food, wines and culture of Australia and New Zealand.
