Carol Jazzar Gallery is pleased to present Byways, a solo exhibition by Miami artist Robert Huff. This will be Huff's second exhibition at the gallery and will feature a series of large paintings and a sculptural work.

Robert Huff's elegant abstract landscapes are created with building materials and references to architecture and man-make structures. The surfaces of the constructions are oriented strand board (OBS) that has been covered with multiple layers of heavy acrylic paint which is then carefully sanded and stripped to reveal subtle colors, textures and patterns. Flat coal black chalkboard paint areas make a stark contrast to this organic surface and provide another surface for Huff's delicate drawing. Along with the paintings, a small bronze sculpture will also be presented.

These works are inspired by Huff's time in the Appalachian Mountains and his exploration of the coal regions of southwestern Virginia, West Virginia and eastern Kentucky.  In this landscape the drama of the environmental battle is sobering. Coal companies are digging deep into mountains with slight regard for human life. Their practice of mountain top removal literally decapitates mountain ranges and effectively destroys the majesty of the ancient mountains, forests, streams, wildlife habitat, and entire communities.

Robert Huff is a longtime Miami resident. Fishing throughout the keys and the Everglades has given him a great appreciation of South Florida's delicate and beautiful landscape. Now spending part of the year in the coalmining region of the southern Appalachians, he has developed a fascination with that fragile environment.

Huff's work has been exhibited at various instutions including the Lowe Museum, Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art, MOCA North Miami and the Bass Museum. He has had numerous public commisions and his work is included in private and public collections such as Delta Airlines, Miami-Dade and Broward Art in Public Places, Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art and the Ringling Museum of Art.
