With many successful solo shows across the UK, Heather Nevay brings her latest collection Flesh and Blood to Miami. Each scene, presented in oil on panel, depicts a seemingly simple moment that becomes complicated in its detail. This series subverts traditional portraiture conventions with storytelling techniques that will the leave the viewer haunted.
101/Exhibit is proud to bring you in to the world of Flesh and Blood, with the works of Heather Nevay, on display from February 11th through March 3rd with an opening reception held on Friday, February 10th.
In her first solo show with 101/Exhibit, Nevay presents a collection of oil paintings that bring the viewer to the tipping point of childhood imagination. Through her hauntingly playful portraits, Nevay teeters on the moment between youthful idealism, and grim reality. The initial style of her work is an unmistakable reference to the classic British portraits, however each layer reveals increasingly current and relevant themes such as betrayal, isolation, and control.
With each work, Nevay explores the true experience beneath the imposed idyllic state of childhood. The seamless detail in every figure adds to an overall psychology that begs the viewer to look closer. The animals, the trees, even the folds of clothing that surround the characters act as clues to a mystery that only the keeper of these images can solve. Each fantastical element is part of a puzzle that the viewer must actively piece together.
Writer and filmmaker James Burge compliments a collection of Nevay’s work at London’s Portal Gallery, "Heather Nevay’s paintings shock at fist sight. She employs a repertoire of images that appear to have found their way to us from Hieronymus Bosch via classic cinematic horror … But to see in these pictures a simple-minded desire to shock would be a great mistake. Heather Nevay’s work is distinguished not by sensation-seeking antics but by the richness and universality of its insights. The artist herself belies any suggestion of dark horror: she is quick-witted and humorous and displays an intense interest in the world around her.”
The artist, Heather Nevay hails from Glasgow, Scotland. She graduated with honors from the Glasgow School of Art, with a B.A. in Art and Design. Among many Scottish galleries, her work has been featured at The Royal Scottish Academy, The Society of Scottish Artists, and at The Royal Glasgow Institute.
