FREEZE FRAME
1 SECOND IN 30 FRAMES

LOCATION 1
4141 NE 2nd Avenue\, Suite 102 (At NE 41st Stre et)
Miami\, FL 33137

FREEZE FRAME presents a colle ction of video still prints by thirty international artists working in narr ative\, non-narrative\, experimental and documentary video. Independent fro m its original context\, a video still may convey the fragmented representa tion of a grander narrative\, exploration or event where subjects and objec ts are inert\, awaiting the progression of temporality. FREEZE FRAME reject s this reductive impulse and embraces the immense possibilities held within this visual tension. Whether it is gesture\, action or void\, the video st ill captures the nuance of communication and works with both the imaginatio n and communal understandings of cinematic expression to open up a new spac e for creative inquiry in which linear time is abstracted and all narrative s are made possible. Collectively\, these thirty video stills add up to a s ingle second in time (30fps)\, and each artist authors a part of the new st ory-telling tradition that is FREEZE FRAME\, or the transcendence of the bo undaries of experience\, memory and the medium itself.

Accompany ing the exhibition will be a site-responsive sculptural installation by Car los Sandoval de Leon. FREEZE FRAME will travel to Talman + Monroe Gallery\, Brooklyn\, NY in February 2009\; and blank projects\, Cape Town\, South Af rica in May 2009.

SAT•EL•LITE n< br />1. any natural or man-made object that orbits about a body\, often rel aying communications signals or carrying instruments to gather environmenta l data

LOCATION II
SCOPE Mia mi
2951 NE 1st Avenue (Between NE 29th &\; 30th Streets)\, Booth 32 6
Miami\, FL 33127

SATELLITE is a curatorial projec t that expands upon the conceptual framework of Rush Arts’ concurrent exhib ition FREEZE FRAME and further deconstructs visual narrative into its const ituent parts to test the durability of durational structures. In SATELLITE\ , sculptural artifacts found within the video stills of FREEZE FRAME are ex tracted and presented as small monuments that simultaneously pay homage to the artists’ original intent and open up a new space in which to view and u nderstand these familiar objects. Outside of this appointed use and their c onventional function\, these objects take on absurdist\, biographical and h ybrid meaning and redefine notions of utility to broaden the tradition of v isual story-telling. Satellite surveillance video links the two exhibition spaces and allows the artifacts of SATELLITE to physically orbit and dialog ue with the original bodies of work on view in FREEZE FRAME at location I i n the Design District.

Concurrent with its efforts t o support a unique constellation of creative practices—a constellation broa dly defined by experimental ventures in performance\, visual art\, curatori al work and community involvement—Rush Arts aims to provide an inclusive sp ace for new audiences and broaden the parameters of the artistic community at large. Rush Arts is a core program of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Founda tion\, a non-profit organization founded in 1995 by brothers Russell\, Dann y and Joseph Simmons that is dedicated to providing urban youth with signif icant exposure and access to the arts\, as well as providing exhibition opp ortunities to emerging and mid-career artists who are not commercially repr esented. All exhibition programs are headed by Derrick Adams\, Curatorial D irector\, and Nico Wheadon\, Associate Curator and the exhibition and educa tion programs of the gallery are sponsored in part by a grant from the New York State Council for the Arts and are free and open to the public.
