By this I mean big seas and powerful subject matter benefit from energetic, physical, and confident painting which usually includes allowing the paint to have its own way. Dripping pouring, throwing, lifting, shaking, etc..add to these involuntary effects".</p> <p class="p1">Sole says he is striving to achieve a state he calls <strong><em>Involuntarylism</em></strong>, a concept in which the built up knowledge in the artist's hand is permitted to come through in an instinctive approach to the application of the materials.</p> <p class="p1"><strong><em>Involuntarylism</em></strong> is the act of allowing the paint and gravity to create the painting itself, while subject to the artist's "puppeteering" and manipulation of built up knowledge and past experience, allowing the paints characteristics to create organic patterns, atmosphere, and substantiation.</p> <p class="p3"><strong>About the Artist</strong></p> <p class="p1">Since graduating with a BA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2008, Michael Sole has gone on to exhibit in group and solo shows across England and France. In 2009 and 2010 he was awarded "Young Artist of the Year" by the Royal Society of Marine Artists for his work exhibited in the Mall Galleries, London. In 2013 he was awarded the 'Arts Charitable Trust Award' in the Royal Society of Marine Artists annual exhibition in London.</p> <p class="p3">&nbsp;</p> <p class="p3"><strong>The exhibition will be on view through November 1st, 2014.</strong></p> <p class="p2">&nbsp;</p> <p class="p3"><strong>Yeelen Gallery</strong> is a contemporary art space dedicated to the promotion and expression of Contemporary Urban Culture. The following year, in which the Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe dies, Andy Warhol screened the image of the starlet over painted canvases, including golden ones, immortalizing Monroe and establishing her image as one of the most recognized artworks in the world. In 1964, the cult classic film&nbsp;<em>Goldfinger</em><em>&nbsp;</em>was released and became one of the most iconic James Bond films ever made. The movie unambiguously associated gold with power, glamour but also danger. The exhibition highlights Anatsui&rsquo;s recent work and features twelve monumental metal wall and floor sculptures, widely considered to represent the apex of his career to date. In addition, a series of works on paper illuminate his artistic process, while wooden wall reliefs reference his extensive work in other media.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Drawing on the artistic and aesthetic traditions of his birth country of Ghana, his home in Nigeria and various Western art forms and movements, Anatsui&rsquo;s work combines personal, local and global concerns. The artist&rsquo;s most recent pieces are inspired by the &ldquo;huge piles of detritus from consumption&rdquo;, particularly in his local environment. Anatsui arranges for the collection of discarded aluminum bottle tops, seals and labels produced by local Nigerian distilleries, which are then bent, twisted and pieced together to create massive, colorful, richly-textured hanging works. Given liquor&rsquo;s crucial role in the slave trade, these monumental pieces also reference colonial relationships between Europe, Africa and the United States.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">As the exhibition travels, each installation of Anatsui&rsquo;s artwork will be quite different. The artist encourages museum staff to &ldquo;sculpt&rdquo; each metal piece as they install it, and so the works are condensed, expanded or reshaped to fit the space and sensibility of each institution. Derived from a communal process, the beautiful metal pieces displayed as part of&nbsp;<em>Gravity and Grace&nbsp;</em>transcend the artist&rsquo;s particular cultural influences to embody a universal meaning.</p> Thu, 21 Aug 2014 11:18:15 +0000 Simon Starling - Pérez Art Museum Miami - April 24th - September 14th <p style="text-align: justify;">P&eacute;rez Art Museum Miami presents&nbsp;<em>Inverted Retrograde Theme, USA (House for a Songbird)</em>, a large-scale installation from 2002 that traces the paradoxes of modernist architecture in the Caribbean.&nbsp;This recent acquisition, by conceptual artist Simon Starling (b.1967), references a housing project in Puerto Rico which was designed by Austrian architect Simon Schmiderer (1911-2001) in the 1960s. Inspired by modernist musician Arnold Schoenberg (1874&ndash;1951) , Schmiderer developed a series of houses made of building blocks without doors or windows to further integrate the outside and inside spaces, thus pushing forward his utopian ideals throughout his plan. Ironically, the rise of crime in the 1970s forced locals to add elaborate barriers onto Schmiderer&rsquo;s designs. In<em>Inverted Retrograde Theme, USA</em>, Simon Starling recreates two of the existing homes on a smaller scale and inverts them like birdcages; these models sit atop tree trunks that extend from the gallery&rsquo;s floor. Starling&rsquo;s work exemplifies an ironic interpretation of how modern utopian notions failed when confronted with reality, and creates a whimsical inverted utopia.&nbsp;</p> Thu, 21 Aug 2014 11:07:48 +0000 Shahzia Sikander - Pérez Art Museum Miami - May 22nd - September 14th <p style="text-align: justify;">Shahzia Sikander&rsquo;s (b.1969) work combines traditional Indo-Persian imagery and techniques, especially those of miniature painting, with the language of contemporary art. Her multi-faceted practice offers captivating, visceral compositions that reflect on her own cultural background. Raised in Pakistan and currently working in the United States, Sikander&rsquo;s drawings, paintings, videos, and large-scale wall installations came to prominence in the mid-1990s within the context of identity politics, and serve as an ironic comment on Western preconceptions of her cultural origins. She often explores Hindu and Muslim allegories, generating an alternative visual experience through layers of contrasting motifs. P&eacute;rez Art Museum Miami will present<em>&nbsp;The Last Post&nbsp;</em>(2010), a video animation with sound that addresses the complex relationship between East and West. Without a linear narrative style, the video focuses on the image of an 18th-century colonial merchant from the infamous East India Company, whose figure crashes into Indo-Persian imagery and the cadence of experimental music.</p> Thu, 21 Aug 2014 11:03:20 +0000
