Art|Basel Miami Beach #3: Brazil Art Fair, Banksy at Art Miami
by ArtSlant Team

LOOKING TO BRAZIL

Charlie Schultz at the first Brazil Art Fair

The way the gallerist Lourdina Jean Rabieh describes it the Brazilian art world is heating up. Because the art market and the greater economy are interlinked, the number of galleries and museums taking root in major cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro has grown significantly as the economy has flourished. There may not be an art district, like Chelsea in New York, but there are well over one hundred galleries in São Paulo, Rabieh muses, before offering the boom in contemporary Chinese art half a decade ago as a possible precedent..

There was never a Chinese art fair, but now there is the Brazil Art Fair, and it is utterly unique in so far as it is the only nationally oriented fair in the mix. All the galleries are either from Rio or São Paulo, but there is no more homogeneity to the artwork on view than one would expect from LA or NYC. In fact, it’s wildly diverse. Prior to entering the fair, I was terribly ignorant about Brazilian art. Now I’m a fan, and that’s partly because of the infectious enthusiasm of the gallerists, all of whom I spoke with were showing in Miami for the first time...

Banksy Ex Situ: Stephan Keszler Shows Street Works at Art Miami

by Natalie Hegert

At Art Miami there’s quite a bit of buzz concerning a slice of wall and a car door. No, it’s not a Gordon Matta-Clark or a John Chamberlain—the objects in question have been put on display and put up for sale because of a certain cheeky and infamous British artist. For the second year in a row, visitors to Art Miami and Context will have the opportunity to view some Banksy street work, up close and personal.

Following last year’s Banksy Out of Context special exhibition at Art Miami/Context – where Bankrobber gallery displayed several panels, some from Banksy’s 2005 trip to Palestine, and others from London – art dealer Stephan Keszler has once again transplanted the street artist’s work from its original context and plopped it right smack in the middle of an art fair. Bankrobber already set the precedent for this, so this shouldn’t be shocking, right?...

The streets of Wynwood are alive with art and people. Graffiti artists from all over the world are spraying their masterpieces on the walls of local businesses within the perimeter of the Wynwood Arts District for Miami Art Week. Since Sunday afternoon, people have been coming out to walk through the streets, watch the murals being painted live, and attend the various shows, openings and gallery events. For the many pedestrians, local Latin Grammy Nominee DJ/Producer and owner of Pauer Source Studio, Mr. Pauer will be providing live DJ sets from twelve of the best DJs, both local and from around the world...

Miami Art Week is a daunting prospect. With nearly two dozen art fairs, it's nearly impossible to keep track of, not to mention actually going to them all. We culled through the listings and put together a handy-dandy map, a brief synopsis of each fair with events and opening hours. A total of nineteen fairs between Miami Beach and Mainland Miami. Did we miss a couple? Maybe? But we don't think you'll be at a loss of things to do and fairs to visit...
