Just thought you would like to know the story behind the making of Los Angeles A Photographer's View ( an on going project ) well it was published Dec 4th 2010 in Fotovisura Magazine and can be read by going to Go to Albums (1) which is on the right hand side of the page then scroll down and click on LA A Photographer's View. My hopes are that you find this article, an inside look at the day to day work of a documentary photographer, as entertaining as I fond shooting this porfolio exasperating.
Lately I've been walking the streets of Pomon,Ca. Walking the street is how I find the inspiration for my work as a documentary photographer. I have been walking so long my legs ache and my shoes are worn out. On the corner of Garey Ave and Holt Streets I watch drug addicts, postitutes and, gang bangers walk by however; using a camera in this environment would be to dangerous even for a veteran street photographer such as myself.
Working as a Documentary Photographer is a high wire act with being crazy on one side and, being a professional on the other. I have given up anything resembling a normal life in order to get these pictures and, recovering a normal life ( job, friends, a wife ) has become increasingly elusive during this time of economic recession. This recession could not have come at a wores times as I make the transformation form photograhy to cinematoraphy. Although no one comes in to the Arts without paying dues, it just seens I paying more then most.
Documentary Photography requires an extraordinary investment in time, patience, and personal sacrifice. One of the problems of working as a Documentary Photographer is that, if you stay to long with your subject you be come like your subject. My work concerns itself with the observe and the strange. After twenty five years of street photography I believe I've stayed to long in this genera as I now find myself down and out on the srteets of Los Angeles. Although here on the streets is where I find my inspiration, the desire to work as a freelance photographer is over come by the need to work a full time.
