Jerome Soimaud at YEELEN GALLERY September 1st, 2013 - December 30th, 2013

The Revelation of Great: Jerome Soimaud The qualities of a great artist, I suppose, are always up for discussion in the art world. For intellectuals, a great work might be one that elevates the mind or translates an idea. For those who covet the superficial, the captivation of the eye does the trick. Maybe an artist or academician would analyze the work for technical skill: the balance of the composition, manipulation of materials and process, and its maker’s use of color and line, before... Dina Mitrani, along with potential clients, reflected in the mirrored surface of a daguerrotype by photographer Curtis Wehrfritz. The daguerreotype is created when a positive image is imprinted directly on its silvered surface; Photo by Seanica Howe. Recently I had an artist, a very successful sculptor actually, sit me down and explain to me the loss of the ability to "do" in our society. Do you know how to make your grandmother's best meal? I don't either, but in the house in... [more]

All the world’s a stage and it’s not just the Oscars, but the contemporary art fairs of late, who are commanding it.   I, for one, have been a reluctant participant in this global drive for exposing contemporary art to the masses.  But thanks to Art Miami LLC and its director, Nick Korniloff, I too have become a member of the captivated audience of the art fair. Art Wynwood is its star and has given sunny Miami an event that lives up to the hype of its current art scene, one often written about bu... [more]

I went to the Appropriated Gender opening on Saturday night. So many interesting works of art were spread across three floors, from Kandy Lopez's attitude-filled giant portraits to the thoughtful craft-inspired works of Martin Casuso, an adorable painting ("Kissable") of one of JC Bravo's big-headed cabezones and a latch-hook rug by Kathleen Kranack that will remind you, "It's Your Fault."  Artist Karla Caprali has three works in Appropriated Gender. I could go on about some of the works, which include sculpture, insta... [more]

(Image: Mario Algaze, Techeros, 2008; © Mario Algaze) Mario Algaze (b. 1947, Havana, Cuba) Looking at Mario Algaze’s photographs on Latin America is like being transported to Gabriel García Márquez’s Cartagena or Julio Cortázar’s Buenos Aires. There is timelessness in his silver-gelatin or platinum, black and white images that can only be addressed with one word: classic. “What I look for is a message that will resonate ten, fifteen years from now, and will stay timeless,” says Algaze, ta... (Image: Debra Holt, Skyscape 8016, C-Print, 2010; © Debra Holt) Debra Holt (b.West Palm Beach, Florida) Expansive in her experimentation, Debra Holt is highly methodical in her search for results. Willing to employ a wide variety of media, Holt habitually seeks expressivity in form, but form not so abstracted that it abandons its imagistic associations. Indeed, the images, and materials, on which the artist bases her works remain visually and sensually evident, permeating her compositions... [more]
