The Revelation of Great: Jerome Soimaud The qualities of a great artist, I suppose, are always up for discussion in the art world. For intellectuals, a great work might be one that elevates the mind or translates an idea. For those who covet the superficial, the captivation of the eye does the trick. Maybe an artist or academician would analyze the work for technical skill: the balance of the composition, manipulation of materials and process, and its maker’s use of color and line, before... I went to the Appropriated Gender opening on Saturday night. So many interesting works of art were spread across three floors, from Kandy Lopez's attitude-filled giant portraits to the thoughtful craft-inspired works of Martin Casuso, an adorable painting ("Kissable") of one of JC Bravo's big-headed cabezones and a latch-hook rug by Kathleen Kranack that will remind you, "It's Your Fault."  Artist Karla Caprali has three works in Appropriated Gender. I could go on about some of the works, which include sculpture, insta... [more]

(Image: Brad Bixler, Organic Relief 046, 2011, Organic Plant Flesh; © Brad Bixler)   Brad Bixler (b. 1966, SanFrancisco, CA) Creating Organic sculptures starts a unique relationship with Nature. By removing the fallen Organic material from its natural environment, and for a moment harnessing its life energy, I quickly move to the process.  Molding, ripping and tearing the plant flesh, after the shape is formed, the embalmment for the afterlife begins. Like a mortician preparing a corpse, t... [more]

(Image: Edoaurd Duval Carrie, Mutant-3, 2011, Mixed Media in artist custom frames; © Edoaurd Duval Carrie) Edoaurd Duval Carrie (b. 1954, Haiti) I personally believe that most artists are in one way or another reflections of their immediate surroundings. What they are confronted with on a daily routine is bound to affect and influence their personal visions of the world. This general tendency would simplify my answers to inquiries on the relative importance of popular culture in the context of... [more]

(Image: Mark Handforth, Electric Tree; © MOCA NOMI) Mark Handforth (b. 1969, Hong Kong) Inspired by everyday urban existence, Mark Handforth's sculptures are poetic, lyrical, and wryly comical objects that comment on daily life and human interaction. Through a corporeal engagement with scale and distortion of form, Handforth imbues works such as an illuminated street lamp resting on the ground, a weeping neon moon, and a monumental coat hanger with distinctive personalities. Mark Handforth was... [more]

(Image: Ramon Bofill, Flowers and Lines, 2011, Mixed Media on paper, 22.25 x 22.25 in.; © Ramon Bofill) Ramon Bofill (b. 1972, Pisa, Italy) The root of my work is focused on the deconstruction of pattern and the perception of actual and implied texture. My use of found fabrics, hand-crafted materials and traditional painting media result in hybrid surfaces that combine to create a mixture of painting, tapestry and installation. For the past couple of years, my preferred medium has been inspired... [more]

(Image: Federico Uribe, Rabbit, Puma shoes; © Now Contemporary Art) Federico Uribe (b. 1962, Bogota, Colombia) Uribe's works adopt a hybrid character that creates resistance to classification. Uribe is a conceptual artist resorting to the language of pop art through the use of objects of daily life, but with a formal reference to the history and tradition of classical art. Uribe creates sculptures which are not sculpted but constructed and weaved, in all kinds of different ways, curious and unp... [more]

(Image: © Carolina Sardi) Carolina Sardi (b. Argentina) My art it's my way to express my world vision. I try to convey the maximum of information in the most minimal but essential forms .The concept is as important as the image and the space as important as the shapes. What appears as simple at first glance, becomes upon closer registration much more intricate . The interaction with the spectator brings forth multiple personal interpretations. Material source for my art comes from various pla... [more]

(Image: Agustina Woodgate, Galaxy, Stuffed Animal skins, 6.5 ft x 6.5 ft, 2010; © Agustina Woodgate) Agustina Woodgate (b. 1981, Buenos Aires, Argentina) I aim to create art that fosters exchanges between people rather than encounters between a viewer and object. Through these exchanges, meaning is elaborated collectively, rather than in the space of individual consumption. Often responding to a place or situation, I makes objects, site-specific, gallery and context-based installations, films,... [more]
