The Artist Next Door

Occasionally we are given a glimpse into the artist as mere mortal. The same men and women who produce art that is sold for millions at auction and are discussed and dissected for hours by scholars and the common man do, indeed, walk among us; and “From Picasso to Koons: The Artist as Jeweler” is proof. The most admired and glorified modern and contemporary artists are also jewelers. Who knew? And this small, yet impressive, exhibition is a precious reminder that art need not take on... [more]

Bill Viola is a Mad Genius

Bill Viola at Museum of Contemporary Art - North Miami (MOCA NOMI)

Bill Viola’s “Liber Insularum” is, in a word, powerful. It brings to mind the transcendental power of Ann Hamilton’s recent Park Avenue Armory show, “The Event of a Thread,” where billowy white curtains coupled with pulley supported swings worked in concert with the monotonous readings of philosophical and spiritual prose. Here, instead of integrating the viewer into a strange world created through participatory installation, Viola uses digital media as a tool to directly communicate wi... [more]

All the world’s a stage and it’s not just the Oscars, but the contemporary art fairs of late, who are commanding it. I, for one, have been a reluctant participant in this global drive for exposing contemporary art to the masses. But thanks to Art Miami LLC and its director, Nick Korniloff, I too have become a member of the captivated audience of the art fair. Art Wynwood is its star and has given sunny Miami an event that lives up to the hype of its current art scene, one often written ab... [more]

Kinke Kooi: before yesterday I wasn’t at all familiar with her work or her name, but doesn’t it just have a ring to it? Kinke Kooi. I walked into Feature Inc. with my friend Daniel Feinberg and immediately being at Basel felt better, the anxiety lifted. Kinke Kooi’s work resonates and it quickly became clear that I didn’t need to know anything about her because I knew everything standing in front o... [more]

DOING IT RIGHT: ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH
by Joel Kuennen
Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB) is the mother of American art fairs (you know this by now). Celebrating a decade this year, ABMB has, from the beginning, been a city-wide event. Every year, a new satellite fair/festival/happening/event is added to the already art-packed weekend and yet it seems Miami has an art tolerance on par with your average Baseler’s liver. ABMB became the destination par excellence in the art world, not only a... [more]

ALTERNATIVE MOONS: Experiences on the Outer Fringe
by Natalie Hegert
Imagine Art Basel Miami Beach is a planet. It is after all, the big centralizing force to which all other early December Miami fairs, events, and exhibitions compare themselves. Those are usually referred to as satellite fairs: orbiting moons. Some of these moons are quite large, and orbit in close proximity to the Basel planet, while others are mere specks out on the fringe. Some of these moons have quite erratic, elliptical orbits, spinning i... [more]

VERNISSAGE BARRAGE
by Nathaniel Sandler
Art Basel: a beautiful hodgepodge of disheveled gallery assistants and even more disheveled millionaires. For those who have never been, Art Basel Miami Beach is one of the largest annual contemporary art fairs in the world. The main event and the countless satellite fairs around the city attract the rich and the hip from all over, who are in a constant incestuous competition to feel like they’re hanging out with one another. It’s a cultured... [more]

Veronica Bruce - 1st Place, ArtSlant Prize 2012
I met Ms. Bruce in a studio that looks more like a construction site than an artist’s studio, in one of Chicago’s many industrial lofts. Her sculptures rose vertically from the wooden floor, dotting the space as piles of material rounded the interior. Bruce’s process is founded in her training as a painter but has since expanded off the wall and into the exhibition space. She retains an acute understanding of composition and color while exp... I went to the Appropriated Gender opening on Saturday night. So many interesting works of art were spread across three floors, from Kandy Lopez's attitude-filled giant portraits to the thoughtful craft-inspired works of Martin Casuso, an adorable painting ("Kissable") of one of JC Bravo's big-headed cabezones and a latch-hook rug by Kathleen Kranack that will remind you, "It's Your Fault."
Artist Karla Caprali has three works in Appropriated Gender.
I could go on about some of the works, which include sculpture, ins... [more]

Dreaming of life on Mars in Miami, I consider the effects it might have on American painting. Black Gods from Outer Space affect the inner space of a few artists I am friendly with in New York, yet the psychotropic rove that is Dade County presents a cosmic cathexis in its formidable design district. Gallery Diet contains and expands upon a mutual investment of a community inquiry into the movement from observation to perception. From the false stasis and sway of a palm-treed reality to the e... Trotting around Wynwood Friday night en route to the Wynwood Walls party with a friend, I passed by two men sitting outside a well lighted, small but professional kitchen, walls dripping with art. They invited us in, fed us chicken and quinoa and told us their story as people meandered in and out of the studio/kitchen wondering what was what: Friends, a French-American Artist, Paul Frank Wagner and Italia... As an artist I know how it feels to be only known for one from of media that I use. I think this is true with Gines Serran. I had known about the sculpture work that was put up in Mary Brickell Villiage but never really had seen his paintings. When I went to the opening for this show, I was so impressed by how much texture was placed on the canvas. The colors are amazing and over all the work is outstanding. I think Any artist or art lover should go see this retrospective at least once in pers... [more]
