Zakkir Hussain at GALLERYSKE - Bangalore January 17th - February 27th
Posted 1/21/15

Zakir Hussain’s latest works at Gallery SKE in Bangalore is a wonderful presentation of works to understand that originality can only be claimed as an unclaimed, seen as the other in the final omnipresent grand narrative of itself. The claim to originality that his works make in the beginning is by having a title ‘no title’. This is very interesting as the self proclamation of having no title negates the presence of the trace of the past. If there is any c... [more]

Morgan and Yun-Woo Choi at Able Fine Art NY Gallery, offers a fascinating glimpse at how three accomplished artists approach the challenging tasks of creating something new, pushing boundaries, and incorporating layers of meaning into singular works of art. Do I want to be a pop song?

I have a nine to five job working for a non-profit. I used to be a part-time educator/part-time stay at home mom, wondering artist. Before that, on occasion I was a full time Art teacher and alternately a full time mom. I was at a meeting the other day, where someone referred to Housewife artists in a not-so complimentary light. I had to chuckle inside. What is the difference between an artist who stays at home with her kids and a housewife who makes art? Quality, I guess..getting to be cal... [more]

How can we present entire Museum collections, acquired from different periods of time, different countries, and with different motives and aesthetics, in a way that makes them comprehensible for diverse audiences? The co-curators of a new exhibition in Israel write about their approach to tackling the permanent acquisitions at their institute, forging surprising new connections between works from different eras. The collection of the Haifa Museum of Art was accumulated in two defining periods in... [more]

Art or Not?
by
1/10/15 Posted 1/10/15

Art or Not? Who is to say what is art or not? One of the pictures with description below is a genuine art work: every Friday ArtSlant asks our discerning readers if they can spot the difference. This week, it's a bad hair day. #1 "Painted in two separate periods, this picture has a complex history. In its original state, it showed a pink-faced man, wearing a white shirt and a black suit. It was painted in a deliberately simple, naive style, using household, rather than oil paint, and incorporate... [more]

All This WInter Needs is a Burst of Color!

In the heart of Winter, color is exploding at Harlem's La Maison d'Art, where artist, Tomo Mori's debut curatorial undertaking - Color Play -has energized the elegant, garden gallery space. The exhibition, as the name implies, experiments with color, and creates a dialog between the works of two artists; both using meticulous and non-traditional approaches to the ancient technique of collage. Along with Mori's signature canvas-on-canvas collages, the exhibition includes photo-montages created by C... [more]

ART AND AUTISM: "COLORS AND EMOTIONS" FROM AN EXPERIENCE IN ITALY
by
12/30/14 Posted 12/30/14

One of the top 5 videoclips in 2014 at my YouTube channel is "Colors and Emotions: The other side of autism". The clip simply shows images from a workshop with autistic kids who reproduced some of my artworks from"Lacer/actions" Project (about torn and decomposed publicity posters, natural cracks and scratches, urban signs). The 2nd edition of this wonderful activity was curated by Patrizia Sapri who carried out as well as (in Anzio-Rome) an interesting exhibition ("Scratches, Cracks and Lac... [more]

This is a “Season’s Greetings card” dedicated to the limited-edition of a 3 silk scarves series I created for my "Lacer/actions Art Project”. The images of dirty, torn, and worn paper of the publicity posters on outdoor billboard have become silk scarves too! After to be already transferred on canvases, lithographic prints and aluminium my "Lacer/actions" artworks were transformed in silk textiles designs thanks to collaboration of Bruno Boggia Disegni (Como, Italy) who... ArtSlant Presents Philippa's Page 3 Pin-Ups
by
12/16/14 Posted 12/16/14

Selected by London-based writer Philippa Snow, ArtSlant's Page 3 Pin-Ups is an acerbic take on the topless tabloid muse. The new weekly series is inspired by Playboy’s Playmates, Page Three, and Letters To Penthouse: for anyone who’s ever muttered the phrase “fuck contemporary art” and really meant it. Today’s internet-smashing pin-up is notable for the fact she has everything the modern gentleman wants: an ass that won’t quit, one that Sir Mix-A-Lot (O.B.E.) would love.... [more]
