Mist Gallery Blog-Dec.2014 Interview-http://www.mistgallery.com/blog/2014/12/6/interview-with-jane-dell

Could you give us a brief introduction to who you are and what kind of work you make?
I was born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx with an artistic family. At an early age I knew I wanted to be an artist. My mother brought me to Saturday art classes, and from there I won a year’s scholarship to the Art Students League that started my art career. I later attended the prestige’s high school of Music and Art and received my BFA degree from Pratt Institute.  I have been painting for many years and my current work focuses on painting, collage and mixed media. My work has been exhibited and collected widely in the Northeast and L.A., and In the past few years I have had solo shows at the Monmouth Museum, The Creative Center in NY, the 1st Presbyterian Church Gallery on Fifth Avenue, and The Delaware Valley Art Alliance Gallery in upstate, NY.

Is there a particular artist you feel you relate to? Who are your role models (artists or non-artists)?
One of my favorite artists is the painter/printmaker Jasper Johns and I keep in mind one of his most famous quotes, “Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.” It helps me push a particular image or theme to its limit.

What do you feel are the recurring themes in your visual work?
For the past few years this theme is primarily animals, endangered, or extinct, fantastical human forms, and contemporary debris that exist within a landscape of imagined chaos. Very often the scene is constructed from the subjects’ point of view, as if the animals and fantastical forms are telling the story.

What is the best piece of artistic advice you’ve been given?
he best piece of advice I’ve been given by fellow artists is to be hardworking and persistent!
