Tiwani Contemporary is a new London gallery focusing on Contemporary Art informed by the contemporary visual art and culture of Nigeria, Africa and its diaspora, as well as the Global South and aims to present this to an increasingly interested London audience.
An important part of what we want to do at Tiwani is that as social entrepreneurs we are committed to supporting in a concrete way artists, curators, writers and organisations based in Nigeria and other parts of Africa by making sure that they have international visibility and generate income for the long-term sustainability of the respective local art scene.
Through our public programme, that is supported by the A.G. Leventis Foundation and which includes artists’ visits, panel discussions and residencies we intend to engage not only our UK audiences but also our audiences in Africa and its Diaspora. In addition we recognise the lack of documentation that exists about the work of modern and contemporary African artists, consequently we feel the sense of urgency to begin this documentation through a vigorous publication programme providing in many cases the first catalogue for many of the exhibiting artists.
Tiwani Contemporary held its opening to mark its official launch on 6 December 2011. The exhibition 'The Tie That Binds Us' presented the work of emerging and established artists from Nigeria and its diaspora working in a variety of media including photography, sculpture, mixed media, video and sound, which explored the diverse complex social and cultural issues of their environment.
Tiwani Contemporary works in collaboration with the Centre of Contemporary Art, Lagos (CCA, Lagos), to devise a dynamic and innovative art and public programme.
