Object to be Awakened is an artwork that, while based upon the ‘primary forms’ of much
minimal sculpture, is a performative rather than simply a formal object. The ritual is based
upon that performed upon the judicial figures of nkisi nkondi, carved by the Kongo people,
into which nails and other metal objects are driven to mark the taking of an oath, or the
witnessing of an agreement, each blow awakening the spirit (nkondi) which is the guardian
of justice.
Similarly, on each morning it is agreed to exhibit this work, a nail is to be driven into it by a
representative of the gallery.
