If the world is as big as people say it is then surely we have to break it down into the things we can understand. The chair we are sat on, the table we are eating at, the food we are eating, the newspaper we are reading these things are tangible and make the routine of life just a little easier. They inform our movements, our behaviour, our understanding of space, they make our space.

Gallery Primo Alonso is proud to present three young artists, Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom, James Howard and Robert Pratt, who attempt to decipher the world through the routine of everyday. You have to boil the water before you make a cup of tea and you have to mix the paint before you can make a painting. Art is as much a part of routine for these artists as an overall existence is.

Using his studio as a stage and everyday objects as characters, Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom creates a performance environment charged with meditative and poetic action, creating situations with accessible objects, which are activated during a brief performance.  The result is filmed, photographed and re-enacted as installations that make up a record and contribute to the work as a whole.This process evokes a timeless state, accentuated further by the artist’s inclination towards non-specific materials

Taking its cue from advertising, James Howard’s work takes the images that pop up on our computer screens and cover the back pages of our magazines and brings them to the forefront. These quasi-adverts lure the audience into this shady world of false products and credit card fraud. Though fake, the work so closely references these images that it is unclear where reality ends and fiction begins.

‘On hearing the alarm I get up, walk into the bathroom and sit on the toilet, I don't need to but I am too tired to stand and aim. I lean over and run the shower to an acceptable warmth, once my body is wet I soap my armpits and chest then my face before i wash my feet and rinse. Shampoo is next and well lathered because it feels good to rub my scalp, the perfumed suds are then run off with the hot water. As I stand to reach for my towel the windows appear frosted with condensation so the windows must be opened. I step out of the shower and towel myself dry. Deodorant and after shave are applied, then I walk naked into my bedroom to dress. Underpants, socks, trousers, shirt (my back is still wet), sweater, jacket, shoes, bag, wallet, phone, keys. Every morning it is the same. ‘
