Including cinematic classics such as Smithson's Spiral Jetty (1970), and Signer's Suitcase: On the Road with Roman Signer, (1996) to new works from James Capper, Matt Firpo, Adeline De Monseignat, New British Art and Hector Castells. From fiction to documentary, from art house to blockbuster, this curated program is sure to cast sculpture in an unusual light.
If sculpture often takes the form of stationary objects and film features moving images, what happens when sculpture is captured in film? What do we gain from encountering sculpture in the unlikely context of a cinema?
How is the experience reconfigured by, or for this new medium?
With these questions among those in mind, this screening will feature films and videos selected by sculptors and other artists who are interested in engaging with sculpture through the medium of moving image. It will also explore the reciprocal relationship(s) between these two modes.
Join us at the Genesis Cinema, Mile End. Relax on comfortable sofas in a screening room purpose built for premiers, located in one of the most historic entertainment venues in London.
The program includes classic cinematic reflections of sculpture such as Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970), new works including Matt Firpo’s The Land Art Road Trip (2013) and the natural phenomenon of the bowerbird’s sculptural mating rituals.
‘Are you sitting down? Screening sculpture in/as moving image’ is the final event of the ON YOUR MARKS season Curated by Marsha Bradfield and produced by Lucy Tomlins.
