Drawing Room will present the first major Paul Sietsema exhibition in the UK to include newly commissioned works.
Sietsema’s drawings and films reveal a forensic interest in the materiality of objects and images combined with a more conceptualised concern with the legacies of past eras of art history, the process of image making, and the contextualisation of artefacts. A photo-perfect diptych drawing of an old photograph of a schooner at sea, Ship Drawing 2009, faithfully reproduces in ink on paper both sides of the photographic image, including every dent, rip and aged yellow mark. In other works such as Figure 3 2008, Sietsema uses film as another means in which to allow the representation of an object to be both material and image.
The exhibition will include new work made during 2012, including a suite of four ‘sailboat’ drawings together with works on canvas and a new film.
Paul Sietsema (born 1968) lives and works in Los Angeles and Berlin. He has exhibited widely and has had solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Basel, (forthcoming, 2012); Cubitt, London (2010), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2009), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2009), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2008), Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2003) His work was also included in the last Carnegie International in Pittsburgh (2008) and in the 5th Berlin Biennial (2008).
