Whilst working as a bricklayer's labourer Frank Laws developed not only an admiration for the skill and hard work of the tradesman but also an appreciation of buildings themselves. The housing estates that form the focus of Laws' work were designed and constructed with an ideology in mind. These buildings were not thrown up as they are toay but built with care, craft and attention to detail and Laws reflects this sentiment in the approach to his paintings. This collection of work focuses on the observation of domestic buildings from close quarters and brings us, the audience, inside dwellings looking onto the world outside; verging on the voyeristic.

"Frank Laws' compelling paintings explore the anonymity of urban living through the prolonged meticulous study of neighbouring dwellings. Despite the relative proximity of the buildings and the intensity of his inquiry, clues about their occupants remain eerily scant. The blank vacancy of the room from which they're seen invites us to place ourselves as the viewer looking out onto his world. With a subject matter and workign method that is very much his own, Frank Laws creates intensely personal images that are honest, intriguing and quietly unsettling."
