Utopian Arts Fest

July 10th-22nd

The Parlour Gallery, Mapalim, 181-187 Queen's Crescent, NW5 4DS

A group exhibition of contemporary art on the theme of Utopia draws on imagination, mythology, memory and desire, to explore both personal and global aspirations towards a better world. A series of events accompanies the show, including a workshop for children on ‘Fairies and Superheroes in Utopia’ (Sunday 17th July, 11.30-4.30), an evening of Utopian Visions in Science Fiction (Wednesday 20th July 6-9pm), and an interactive gallery talk with the artists and curators (Saturday 16th July, 12-10pm).

The central focus of Utopian Art Fest is the group exhibition ‘In Dreams Begin Responsibilities’, which takes its title from the short story by Delmore Schwartz that explores the subconscious desire to affect the future by changing the past.

Featuring contemporary art, the show draws on imagination, mythology, memory and desire, to explore both personal and global aspirations towards a better world.

The exhibition aims to capture the spirit of aspiration, hope and creative thinking about contemporary living conditions, as well as contrasting this with visions of Dystopia and explorations of positive/negative dichotomies. Utopia might be an imagined, mythical place or perhaps even a vision of paradise, but it might also be a variation on reality that is mediated by memory, desire or dreams.

The exhibiting artists are: Paul Kindersley, Wuon Gean, Omar Ghazal,Umit Koseoglu, Pato Bosich, Kim Appleby, Ellie Bates, James Pimperton, Emiliano Biancanelli, Mary Yacoob, German Dario Zwanic, Leila Bibizadeh, Alex Cudby, Nathan Ashmall, Al Palmer, Ruth Joyce, Helene Rallo, Lucy Edwards, Tracy Jones.

All the works in the show are presented in competition, with a prize being awarded to the artist whose work receives the most votes from visitors to the gallery.
