The Mosaic Rooms proudly presents Rania Mater, 'A Girl and her Room'. The Arab-American photographer brings her award-winning series of images to the UK for the first time. 'A Girl and her Room' features intimate photographic portraits of teenage girls in their most personal space, their bedroom. Matar took as her subjects teenage girls from the two worlds she experienced herself, the Middle East and the United States, making this project very personal. She became  fascinated by how the teenage girls were acutely aware of each other in groups, affecting how they portrayed themselves and acted. Subsequently she became interested in depicting girls alone in their rooms, thus revealing a truer sense of their selves. Matar comments: “In my images I hope to portray the chasm between childhood and adulthood and the young women straddling it, sometimes as rebels, sometimes as young ladies aware of their newfound sexuality and very often still as children.' Born and raised in Lebanon, Rania Matar moved to the U.S. in 1984. Originally trained as an architect at the American University of Beirut and Cornell University, she worked as an architect before studying photography at New England School of Photography, and at the Maine Photographic Workshops in Mexico with Magnum photographer, Constantine Manos. Her work has won several awards, has been featured in numerous publications, and exhibited widely in the U.S. and internationally. To coincide with the exhibition, The Mosaic Rooms will be hosting an artist talk with Rania Matar on Saturday, 2nd July at 12pm. RSVP info@mosaicrooms.org, 020 7370 9990
