Objet dada presents a selection of artists whose sculptural practices deal in some respect with the decontextualisation of everyday domestic objects, achieved through the use of unusual and impractical materials to create a sense of uncanny. Familiar furnishings of our day-to-day surroundings are interpreted and visually or materially reinvigorated in a manner that intentionally defies their intended purposes.
Taking Duchamp's gesture of changing a working urinal into an impractical "fountain" through the artist’s process of selection, these artists employ a Dadaist vocabulary to take this groundbreaking ethos a step further. The objects that furnish our aesthetically familiar universes are altered not only in function, but in their very material essence and structural constitution.
