Artists and filmmakers continue to look for ways to construct representations of the fleeting spaces that we inhabit and the journeys that we follow which engulf and transport us as city dweller and spectator. Eisenstein wrote on the relationship between film and architecture - “at the basis of the composition of an architectural ensemble is the same ‘dance’ which is at the basis of film montage”. Vitrine Gallery presents a group show of visual art and film inspired by the metropolis, addressing these ideas.
From the bold starkness of Alastair Strong’s photographs of interior spaces to the poetic contemplation of east London streets in Laura Oldfield Ford’s ink drawings to the uneasy sense of the ephemeral within Alejandro Guijarro’s ‘Study for an Endless City’', a movement between interior and exterior space - a duality that characterizes the fabric of the city - is mapped throughout the show.
