Lady Jane Grey (1537-54) is remembered as the tragic Tudor queen who reigned for just nine days. Although there are no certain lifetime portraits of her, this display will explore how artists constructed an idealised image of Lady Jane as a Protestant heroine and martyr. The prints chart her growing popularity, via the influential engraving in Henry Holland’s Heroologia (1620) to the sentimentalised history paintings of the nineteenth-century.
