Bad Behaviour show review
Oct 2012
On the walk from Brixton train station to visit Bad Behaviour, past clothes stalls, car mechanics and food wholesalers which operate underneath the arches – including the wonderfully named ‘Just Yams etc.’ – I wondered how this group exhibition was going to position itself. Would it attempt to engage with the context of Brixton, its independent spirit and history of rebellion and rioting – or was the ‘bad behaviour’ of the title indicative... [more]

Mark Dean at Beaconsfield

Mark Dean’s exhibition at Beaconsfield consists of a back catalogue of 36 of his videos - Retrospective Jukebox - two large-scale installations, a sound piece and a single video piece, arranged over two floors. This is a retrospective of the artist’s work half way through his career.Dean has the uncanny knack of getting under your skin. There is something about the way he manipulates the material properties of film footage and music from a variety of sources that enables him to open up psy... [more]

Melissa Marks at Bloomberg Space
September 10th, 2009 - September 26th, 2009

Melissa Marks' work, Adventures of Volitia: Expulsion from Paradise, currently up at Bloomberg SPACE is inspiring, stunningly beautiful and well worth the visit. The sprawling color drawings pull the viewer around the space, their saturated colors and complex narrative elements provide an intensity and depth that pulls one in and won't let go.
Complementing these eleven power-filled drawings is a series of ceiling-height, black and white wall drawings, culminating in a 22-foot high, 43-foot wide epic. These drawing... [more]

ISA GENZKEN 'OPEN SESAME' at The Whitechapel Art Gallery
5th April - 21st June 2009 Admission free
A turbulent new voice of German sculpture launches the brilliantly expanded Whitechapel Art Gallery, re-opened to an eager audience in April. It's a kind of split identity exhibition that assaults the senses and kicks into the imagination. A graduate of the Berlin and Dusseldorf academies in the 1970s Genzken's sculptural playground bears the hallmark of Professor Joseph Beuys, in her direct ac... [more]
