The Human Endeavour: 'Bauhaus: Art as Life' at the Barbican
by R Jh
Anni Albers, Josef Albers, Marianne Brandt, Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius, Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Hannes Meyer, László Moholy-Nagy, Gunta Stölzl, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe at Barbican Art Gallery

All too frequently the presentation and packaging of the Bauhaus to audiences has been to focus on the leading male quartet of Gropius, van der Rohe, Breuer and Meyer as the pioneers of a cold, precise, machine-driven sect whose tubular chairs and avant-garde works became stereotypical hallmarks of a ‘bourgeois’ European formalism.
Barbican’s ‘Bauhaus: Art as life’ aims to inject the forgotten human endeavour and encounters that took place at Weimar and Dessau, back at the centre of the sc... [more]

A fascinating and exciting show with eight new artists exploring 'what's unsaid.' Avoiding shock and obvious political messaging, each artist respects the mute quality of art, it's form of speechlessness and silent writing to probe the limits of the sayable - whether in terms of language and indentity, abstract qualities of fate or time, or the language of pencil, paper, paint, neon and latex. Materials are to the fore here (and perhaps at time an echo of arte povera) and the curators are to be... [more]

Anish Kapoor at Royal Academy of Arts
September 26th, 2009 - December 11th, 2009

9/2/12
As the first living artist to land a solo show at the Royal Academy, Anish Kapoor’s self-appellated show is an incredibly daring, sensory, and truly contemporary display of the artist’s oeuvre and sculpture today.
Whilst you endure the overwhelming queues outside, the jagged tower of shiny metal spheres, Tall tree and the eye - a new sculpture provided for the exhibit - whets your appetite for the ensuing unctuous crimson wax and grey sludge and slither, spliced with wide concave and convex... [more]

Melissa Marks at Bloomberg Space

Melissa Marks' work, Adventures of Volitia: Expulsion from Paradise, currently up at Bloomberg SPACE is inspiring, stunningly beautiful and well worth the visit. The sprawling color drawings pull the viewer around the space, their saturated colors and complex narrative elements provide an intensity and depth that pulls one in and won't let go.
Complementing these eleven power-filled drawings is a series of ceiling-height, black and white wall drawings, culminating in a 22-foot high, 43-foot wide epic. These drawing... [more]

Liubov Popova, Aleksandr Rodchenko at Tate Modern

Constructivism is deconstucted at the Tate Modern until 17 May.
This major movement emerging in Russia after the russian revolution has questionned deeply and under several perspectives art and its application in everyday life.
At the Tate, works and ideas of two major figures of the constructivism are shown. The photographer, film expert, advertiser, artist, Alexander Rodchenko and the female painter-theatre maker and textile and graphic designer Liubov popova were equally explosing the... [more]
