Untitlede7i6 Robert Kusmirowski: Bunker
Robert Kusmirowski at Barbican Art Gallery September 30th, 2009 - January 10th, 2010
Posted 1/7/10

Having ostensibly hollowed out subterranean passageways beneath the Barbican, Robert Kusmirowski’s creation manipulates the senses for an emotional evocation of time and place.  The Polish artist’s recreation of a World War Two bunker, his first UK solo exhibit, evokes a harrowing wartime narrative. From the onset, it’s clear an affecting experience is being orchestrated, as you face the gloom beyond a rusted metal doorway etched in heavy concrete façade.  A strong sense of exploration into the unk... Keinholz_s032 Kienholz: ‘The Hoerengracht’
Ed and Nancy Kienholz at The National Gallery November 18th, 2009 - February 21st, 2010
Posted 1/7/10

Conspicuous amongst the classical paintings at the National Gallery, challenging issues permeate its first modern installation, a recreation of Amsterdam’s Red Light District.  Prostitution continues to inspire strong reactions, prompting artistic interpretation over the centuries, evidenced here by paintings from 17th century Dutch artists. Conceived by American artists Ed Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz in 1983-8, whose controversial depictions of taboo subjects have influenced contemporary artists such a... [more]

Expulsion10_full9panel18in Paradise
Melissa Marks at Bloomberg Space September 10th, 2009 - September 26th, 2009
Posted 9/22/09

Melissa Marks' work, Adventures of Volitia: Expulsion from Paradise, currently up at Bloomberg SPACE is inspiring, stunningly beautiful and well worth the visit. The sprawling color drawings pull the viewer around the space, their saturated colors and complex narrative elements provide an intensity and depth that pulls one in and won't let go. Complementing these eleven power-filled drawings is a series of ceiling-height, black and white wall drawings, culminating in a 22-foot high, 43-foot... [more]

ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART OVERVIEW   I caught the tail end of the Royal College of Art MA Fine Art and Sculpture degree shows this weekend. When I first found out that the sculpture department separated from the main campus a few years ago the first thing I thought was, what a shame. This really didn’t show a promotion of cross-departmental mixing that other fine art schools seem to.  After seeing both the RCA main campus show at South Kensington and the RCA Sculpture show in Battersea I now kno... Isa Genzken at Whitechapel Gallery April 5th, 2009 - June 21st, 2009

ISA GENZKEN 'OPEN SESAME' at The Whitechapel Art Gallery 5th April - 21st June 2009 Admission free A turbulent new voice of  German sculpture launches the brilliantly expanded Whitechapel Art Gallery, re-opened to an eager audience in April. It's a kind of split identity exhibition that assaults the senses and kicks into the imagination. A graduate of the Berlin and Dusseldorf academies in the 1970s Genzken's sculptural playground bears the hallmark of Professor Joseph Beuys, in her direct ac... [more]
