She explores the intricacy and beauty of nature, which echo human and man-made systems, by responding to visual phenomena such as geometric, linear and circular motifs found in a... [more]

20131218074639-j Jennifer Faist: Forget-Her-Nots
by
Jennifer Faist at Ruth Bachofner Gallery > Los Angeles
January 18th - March 1st
Posted 5/21/14

by Kerry Kugelman In her most recent body of work, Jennifer Faist continues to extend her material and chromatic vocabulary into more subtle and complex areas. Hovering between painting and painted sculpture, Faist’s artwork asserts a robust physical presence while supporting delicate, light-soaked areas of color. Celebratory by dint of her trademark up-tempo, saturated palette, Faist’s latest works also have a hint of the elegiac. It is as though the transient beauty of a cut flower... [more]

by
5/8/14 Posted 5/8/14

photo via Famed artist, "body awareness" theorist, and Austria's "Grand Dame of painting" Maria Lassnig passed away earlier this week in Vienna at the age of 94. Lassnig, born in Austria in 1919, attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna during World War II and is known for her brushy paint strokes and brutal subject matter. Lassnig used painting to explore the human body and psyche, illustrating a critical and sometimes gruesome subjectivity. She herself was often the object of her critical eye. Her l... [more]

White is the first thing that strikes one entering the Infinite White Abyss at K20 Grabbeplatz. Not necessarily Kandinsky’s white, although his masterpiece greets the visitor, but rather the white of the exhibition space itself, an island of haute-design white floating in the middle of a black gallery cube. Also, watch your step – the white space is necessarily and symbolically raised just 3 cm above floor level and that edge is (perhaps also symbolically) unmarked. Falling unwarned... [more]

Adel Gorgy, Traces of Pollock #3, 2013, Pigment Print, 40 x 72 in. (100 x 180 cm.) Adel Gorgy, in his current exhibition, Traces of Pollock, de Kooning and Warhol at Able Fine Art NY in Chelsea has brought keen observation, a graceful esthetic and a unique vision and process to an impressive body of work. In the current age of knockoffs and spinoffs, prequels and sequels, true originality of thought and expression, like Adel Gorgy's, is rare and worthy of attention. In a series of photographi... The exhibition is good, and congrats to the artist. A good friend of mine told me a rather disturbing story recently. He had been working with scott for years, and scott has helped him a great deal. Recently scott has not been able to sell as much art to pay his bills and has resorted to throwing events to sustain his gallery. Scott openly admits his failure, in his bathroom there is a painting that says 'BLACKBALL' which he says he got an employee to make in order to remind him how his ex-wife ha... [more]
