> STATEMENT

Raid Projects is a non-commercial exhibition and curatorial organization that is dedicated to supporting and facilitating innovative cultural production; to ventilating the work of Los Angeles’ cultural producers to the world; and to bringing international projects into the Southern California arena.

To this end Raid implements five primary strategies. First, the Projects develop young artists’ careers by curating and exhibiting works by newly graduated artists at our Los Angeles gallery and providing the support system required to create experimental projects; and by working to introduce these artists to curators, buyers, museum professionals and the more general art public.

Second, Raid is a space where established practitioners with international reputations can pursue new project ideas outside of the constraints and expectations of the commercial and museum spheres. By curating people rather than objects, and by facilitating their exploration of new ideas, Raid nurtures a level of creativity that flourishes in our acceptance for the embryonic and the un-saleable.

Third and fourth, Raid both hosts international exhibitions at our Los Angeles space and takes Raid-curated exhibitions of works by established and emerging artists to galleries, project spaces, museums and alternative venues in the United States and globally. Most recently, exhibitions came to Raid from Japan, U.K, Australia and Mexico, and others were taken to Istanbul, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Sydney, New York, Chicago, London, Berlin, Mexico City and Scottsdale.

Last but not least, Raid sustains a year-round artist in residence program, which functions as an opportunity for residents to push their activities into unknown territories, free from the restraint of commercial pressures and any expectation that they will conform to their previous artistic practices. While the residency program is largely focused on providing international artists with living accommodation, studio space, access to the LA art world, and a month-long exhibition, Raid also accepts applications from US-based artists whose projects will benefit from time spent in LA.

By implementing these five strategies Raid Projects strives to examine and foster innovative practices in the local, national and international contemporary field, to present the range and diversity of activities that are occurring there, and to function as an exchange mechanism for ideas, for people and for objects. Rather than operating inside a specific aesthetic agenda, or focusing on a particular style, medium or school of thought, Raid responds thoughtfully to the moment and shows what needs to be shown.

Raid Projects is a completely Non-Commercial Gallery. Raid Projects does not take a commission from the sale of artworks, and all Raid Staff are completely volunteer.
