> DESCRIPTION

Since 1969 Watercolor West has annually promoted and supported a national juried competition and exhibition of artists who paint in transparent watercolor. Transparent watercolor painting is the rendering of work without the use of white paint, allowing the paper itself to represent that hue. It is a pure form of watercolor painting as no images that include mixed media, acrylic, ink, or collage are allowed to compete. RAM and the Brea Art Center and Gallery host the exhibit in alternate years. Watercolor artists have long ago moved beyond painting "pretty bouquets of flowers" to subject matter that packs emotion and strength into each image. Additionally, the technical skill involved in manipulating watery paint is simply astonishing. It is no wonder that the Watercolor West Exhibit continues to draw a large and enthusiastic audience each time it is hosted at RAM.Since 1969 Watercolor West has annually promoted and supported a national juried competition and exhibition of artists who paint in transparent watercolor.
