Marcie Kaufman - Beyond the Line 
Marcie Kaufman's new exhibition, Beyond the Line, explores the idea of line with the context of Israel. The work creates connections between the physical experience with lines - borders, boundaries, walls, gates, wires and branches - as captured in photographs, and the abstract experience of them as explored through painting. Borderlines and bloodlines adjoin in digital landscapes. Religious sites intersect, fuse, and divide. Body and landscape unite: roads become roots, wires weave into rivers and mountains grown from veins. Conflict suspends. Beyond the Line is a mixed media exhibition of painting, photography and digital media drawn from photographs that the artist took in Israel in June 2006. 

Marcie Kaufman’s work interconnects body, nature, and landscape to create new synthesized terrain. With digital renderings of the body (MRIs) and digital maps (Mapquest) as source material, anatomy and topography intersect while painting and graphic image intertwine. The human hand unites digital body with digital landscape through the fusing of cross-section and aerial views.

Marcie Kaufman is an artist, educator, and consultant.  She earned an MFA in Painting and Photography from Claremont Graduate University and a BA in Art History at USC.  She lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Ms. Kaufman was recently included in Biannual, an exhibition juried by MOCA Director, Jeremy Strick, at LAAA South/The Mike Napoliello Gallery. Ms. Kaufman teaches Digital Art, Photography, and Art History at El Camino College, Otis College of Art and Design, and the Skirball Cultural Center. Dan Van Clapp - Homeland Sale, Catalogue #7     
Dan Van Clapp's sculptural installation, Homeland Sale, Catalogue #7, is based on contemporary societal fears and fascinations with weapons of mass destruction. Van Clapp recreates his concept of these "weapons" by fabricating them to resemble old pieces of artillery that have been destroyed, recycled, and rebuilt over time. The artist pokes fun by deconstructing and reconstructing these objects using everyday household materials, i.e. kitchenware and children’s toys.  Contrastingly irreverent, provocative and challenging, Van Clapp’s powerful sculptures capture his view of the military industrial complex in 2007.

Michiko Yao - Cuties     
Japanese-born artist Michiko Yao presents her investigations into female pop-cultures and sub-cultures of Japan. Her multimedia solo exhibition, Cuties consists of three different works: Fancy House, large-scale sculpture/installation, Forever Bud, photography, and Untitled (Wiring Bouquet), video. It explores the Westernized contemporary Japanese women’s psychology behind infantile behavior and the making of fetishes from “cute” merchandise, i.e. Hello Kitty.
