Claire Chene’s new paintings are depictions of lonely landscapes that feature bridges, overpasses and shipyard cranes. All of these subjects suggest the possibility of moving from one place to another. Yet, the paintings are void of people and traffic, as if the subjects were strangely captured during a private moment. These are places that might not normally be noticed, often drab and banal, even intimidating. However, it is clear these “empty” landscapes are sources of great visual and psychological abundance for the artist.
