As part of the 20th National exhibit, LAPS presents "Robert Blackburn-Abstract Innovation (1920-2003)" a memorial exhibition featuring the LAPS 20th National honoree, an important New York artist and influential printmaker whose work is rarely been seen on the west coast.

Special Exhibition Events:
Sunday, November 1st at 1pm:
Phil Sanders, Director of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop will speak about the life and art of this legendary artist and his internationally renowned workshop.

Born in 1920, Blackburn was widely celebrated for his early work as a WPA artist within the Harlem arts community in New York and as the first master printer for the prestigious Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) press in Long Island, where he helped define the so-called 1960s "graphics boom" through collaborations with such artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Grace Hartigan and Jasper Johns. Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop, which he established in 1948, became a major destination and creative catalyst for printmakers in this country and throughout the world. It also helped seed other workshops, including the Lower East Side Printshop in New York, the Asilah Workshop in Morocco, and the first Namibian printshop in post-apartheid South Africa.

Blackburn's own pioneering contributions to the technical and aesthetic development of abstract color lithography are as legendary as his generosity in encouraging and training thousands of diverse artists to explore the graphic medium.
