Phone Booth Gallery is proud to present “Bafoozalla,” an exhibition of evocative new work by Matt Hendon and Joel Zuercher. The show will run from November 21 to December 18, 2009, and a viewing party will be held December 5th from . The all ages event will be held at Basswerks, 5411 W. Adams Blvd, Los Angeles, CA90016.
Zuercher’s work is reminiscent of early “moticos” and posses a grimy, gritty amalgamation of ephemera composed into a body of work bursting with nowness. Color plays a big part in Zuercher’s work as well as Hendon’s. Multiple focal points force the viewer’s eye to deviate and wander around the surface. Read deeper into the origins and processes of its creation, there is much more to discover.
Hendon’s work possesses similarities in color choices, while maintaining a mastery over traditional drawing skills. Using a variety of ball point pens, he scratches beautifully rendered stylized faces and mixes them with obscure, often unreadable hand done typography. Illustrative and bold, both artists remain at the forefront of contemporary illustration and challenge the traditions of fine art.
Both artists’ work deserves a close examination, as it is the minute details that could be overlooked at first glance. Each piece tells a story, whether real or fictional, it is without a doubt a story we all deserve to experience.
