Payan and Vasquez explore crossing borders as a phenomenal and conceptual activity in their installation for Sweeney, Keep on Crossin’ (keeponcrossin.com). The image of R. Carumba, a border-crossing campesino who wears a sombrero and huaraches, is a motif in the work, which acts as a caricature of Mexicaness, and intervenes with this notion in a contemporary context of cultural transformation and political reaction. The installation includes a 22 x 15 foot mural of silkscreen posters, accompanied by a manifesto printed on a tortilla: “When in the course of human events it becomes necessary to cross borders of political, social, linguistic, cultural, economic and technological construction...we will cross.” Vasquez will also conduct Performance Drawing III, which blurs the boundaries of artist and model, and public versus private spaces. Payan will screen a video loop from Aztec Gold with Lou Chalibre, his arts and culture video series hosted by a masked Mexican wrestler. Together, the projects create a multi-media experience that acknowledges the value of freedom, compassion and humor in dealing with people before and after the creation of “boundaries.” Vasquez is an artist based in San Diego whose work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Oceanside Museum of Art, and Galeria de la Raza. Payan is a writer, filmmaker and conceptual artist whose work has been presented in museums, film festivals and conferences in the U.S. and Mexico.
