> DESCRIPTION

Alexander Gorlizkis’ works on paper originate from an obsession with Indian Miniature paintings, a tradition he has subverted and applied to his own idiosyncratic visual language. He creates compositions embedded with irony and humour, to images that can be simultaneously compelling and unnerving. Following Joseph Albers’ dictum that “one plus one equals three,” the artist draws together apparently disparate elements that create a third entity, greater than the sum of its parts.

In the mid 1990’s, Gorlizki established a studio in Jaipur, India. Gorlizki initiates the conceptual design and collaborates with Uddin and other members of the atelier who apply jewel-colored pigments, stone colors and gold-leaf using single-hair-tipped brushes to complete the works of breathtaking intricacy.

Past solo exhibitions have been held at Daniel Weinberg Gallery (Los Angeles, 2008), Ingleby Gallery (Edinburgh, 2008), Kudlek van der Grinten (Cologne, 2007), and Joost van den Bergh (London, 2006, 2004, 2003).
