In November the MorYork Gallery will present a 20 year survey of mixed media constructions and collages titled “Private Practice” by Los Angeles artist Jack Chipman. Chipman is primarily a painter; these “other” works have been a side project over the years and very few have ever been exhibited.
“My mixed media pieces are attempts to incorporate an eclectic assortment of found objects and ephemera into statements either droll or thought-provoking. Myth, both past and present, has been a central theme. Because collecting vintage California pottery has also been a part of my life, I’ve used ceramic elements including shards in some of these works. And because Halloween is my birthday I sometimes include references to this holiday. I especially like masks and have made a number of them, often using recycled packaging materials as a starting point.”
MorYork is a project of artist Clare Graham who has devoted a section of his cavernous studio in Highland Park to presenting local artists on a monthly basis. He currently has a 3 year waiting list for these shows.
Jack Chipman’s “Private Practice” will be on view November 14 to December 6. The opening is Saturday November 14 (NELAart 2nd Saturday Gallery Night) from 7 to 10. Show hours: Saturdays 12-5 or by appointment.
