George Burwick: Fragile
Thursday, September 6 – Saturday, October 27, 2007
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 6, 6-9 PM

The Riverside Art Museum is pleased to present “Fragile,” an installation in the first-floor alcove spaces of the museum, by

Riverside-based multimedia artist Georg Burwick. “Fragile” opens to the public on Thursday, September 6 2007, with a reception during First Thursday Art Walk, 6-9 p.m., and will be on view until Saturday, October 27.

In his work Burwick addresses concepts of time, space, and memory, employing modern pictorial technologies such as photography and video in installation contexts. Burwick actually reflects upon the nature and history of these technologies, examining the interaction between image, perception, and reality the way photographers, filmmakers, and videastes have since the introduction of their respective media. In his reflections, Burwick brings our attention to the space that exists between us and the screen – the distance over which the image is projected, and the distance between our sensate reality and our own optical and mental “projections.” He thus challenges us to re-examine commonplace objects and situations and our relationship to them.

A graduate of Pitzer College in Claremont, Georg Burwick received his MFA at the University of Chicago in 2001. He has exhibited widely throughout the United States. At present he is Director of Digital Media for the new University of California Riverside ARTSblock, the complex of university-run art centers located on Riverside’s downtown Promenade, including the California Museum of Photography, the Sweeney Art Gallery, and the forthcoming Culver Center for the Arts. The Riverside Art Museum is thus especially pleased to be presenting a valued colleague in the downtown Riverside art scene as well as a dynamic young multi-medialist.
