Phone Booth Gallery is proud to present “Untitled”, an exhibition of unapologetic new work by Los Angeles based artist Bryan Schnelle. Featuring twenty mixed-media images, “Untitled” pushes Schnelle’s ongoing exploration of vanity and narcissism still further. The show will run from September 19 to October 17, 2009, and the opening party will be held September 19th from 7-10 pm. The all ages event will be held at 2765 E. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90803.
Like the exhibition itself, Schnelle’s work in the show is intentionally Untitled. He wants viewers to encounter each piece freely, without the looming burden of culturally assigned meaning. He liberated meaning on another, more biting level as well, severing sleek magazine images from their commercial oeuvre.
Schnelle has used one magazine page for each of his pieces, mimicking the page’s original layout but turning its message on its head. He glues the advertisements onto wood panels that have either been painted white or black. Then, using a sharpie marker, he pens ski masks onto models’ faces or blacks out whole segments. The standard chic of publications like Vogue, Elle and Glamour becomes instantly ominous and vibrant lipstick, gold chains, and staged poses begin to look absurd.
By using something as fugitive as a sharpie to invade advertising’s smooth surface, Schnelle suggests that opulence lacks grit. He also suggests that our commercial addiction to decadence can be dismantled.
