ArtSlant maintains a calendar of exhibits and events in each ArtSlant city.
A rich resource for the artist, the collector, the curator and the art lover.
Deaf since childhood, artist Joseph Grigely explores the nuances
between seeing and hearing a musical performance in his new
installation, St. Cecilia.
The project, named after the patron saint of music, features two single
channel videos with footage of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society
singing three traditional Christmas carols with new lyrics written by
Grigely to convey what he calls “lip misreading”--identical lip
formations that produce dissimilar sounds. The portion of the
exhibition presented at the Orange Lounge includes two additional
works; Remembering Is a Difficult Job, But Somebody Has To Do It,
2005, an installation with artificial palm trees, a projected image of
water and a small monitor on which the artist is questioned about the
music he remembers before he was deafened and sings the lyrics to the
Gilligan's Island theme song, and a second audio and visual work that
includes people mispronouncing the name of the artist, Ed Ruscha.
