Bay Area artist Gary Edward Blum continues his exploration of balance and dependent opposition with his recent body of work on view through September 3. Mingling realism and abstraction, he depicts found objects as mutually transforming parts of a greater whole; the juxtaposition of seeming opposites describe a personal examination of the often dual nature of emotion, deliberation, and belief.
Educated at Claremont Graduate University in Southern California, Gina Han employs traditions of Western art in her abstract paintings and infuses them with East Asian elements. Han pours amorphous daubs of acrylic, sometimes piled two layers thick, over flat fields of solid color. She positions the cloud and bean-shaped forms either at random where they seem to float in and out of the picture plane, or in exact spacings that reflect an underlying grid structure. These light-hearted abstractions are deft executions that transcend the purely formal realm in which they initially seem to reside.
