Sound & Motion, a
group exhibition of recent sculpture and installation by artists from
Montréal, Quebec, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, and Stanford,
California. The exhibition brings together individual new media
sculpture and installation by five artists working with the mediums of
sound, video and kinetic art.
Self-Portrait of Paul De Marinis, by San Francisco video artist Jim Campbell, is
an installation in two parts: a transmitter and a receiver. The
transmit side on the left consists of a low-resolution image stored in
the computer’s memory feeding an audio speaker. The receive side on the
right includes an audio microphone and a low-resolution display device
(192 LEDs). The image is encoded into tones with a high tone
representing white, and a low tone representing black. As these tones
are emitted from the speaker they are picked up by the microphone,
decoded into a gray level, and displayed as the next pixel on the
screen. Stanford based artist, Paul De Marinis' sound sculpture Hypnica 1, is a metronome-controlled voice that purports to induce a trance state in the listener. Quebecois new media artist, Diane Landry
uses motors and flipbook animation to create a tableau installation
utilizing digital photography and an English dictionary creating a
humorous Rube Goldberg like motion picture sculpture. Oakland artist Alan Rath
has constructed a towering computer generated video sculpture made of
aluminum, rubber, and a trio of LCD flat screens resembling equal parts
plant, human and machine. In the kinetic sculpture, Deep Impact, Hurling through Space, Los Angeles artist Klutch Stanaway uses
electronic components, colored pencil, plywood, and gouache on paper to
make his version of a ‘do it yourself ‘space satellite.
Diane Landry will have a solo exhibition with SolwayJones in January 2008. Alan Rath has recently completed a public commission for the Oakland International Airport, a robotic wall sculpture titled, Birds In Flight, on view in Terminal 2. Jim Campbell
works are in included in the public collections of The Museum of Modern
Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art San
Diego and Whitney Museum of American Art. Paul De Marinis’s installation, Raindance, is currently being exhibited at Festival Internacional de Arte Contemporaneo Leon, Mexico through September 19, 2007.
