Kamau Patton creates installations, videos and objects that are the result of research into visual communication systems, gesture and ritual. His work is often rooted in living folk practices and mediated by his personal narrative, other folktales and by contemporary shared narratives such as urban architecture, advertising and television. The altered iconography and ritual practices described in Kamau’s projects are based on a variety of living symbolic systems and organized belief systems. His intention in evoking the mythic past is to use these systems as a material to create allegorical spaces that can comment on aspects of the social world as we experience it today. |
