> DESCRIPTION
In Peoplescapes, video still images are presented as photographic
images. Figures are extracted from their environments and
monochromatic backgrounds stand in for a generic public space. The
viewer becomes keenly aware of his/her position as observer and the act
of observing. At a distance the series lures you in with a promise of
intricate detail but as one steps closer, the images literally
disintegrate. The effect emphasizes the fine line between attraction
and estrangement.
Burmester’s interest lies more in questioning the notion of any form of
stereotyping. She uses the disintegration of the medium and the image
produced to express the tension between what we see and what we think
we see.
Kathrin Burmester works in Film, Video, Photography and Installation.
