Phantom Galleries L.A. presents "Surf and Turf", an affectionate yet reverent tribute to the culture of surfing and skate boarding by artist John S. Culqui, opening June 1st thru July 5th, at 344 E. 3rd Street. "I generate my art for the purpose that most artists do, to create dialogue, awareness, emotion and or a memory," says the artist. "Regardless if the work is of a skater or surfer, I want the viewer to feel the motion, smell the water, and feel the grit of the wheels touching the asphalt. I hope to create enough iconographical clues throughout it that the viewer looks closer and ask questions of what it all means." Culqui's clean, whimsical style overlays a deeper, transcendent quality, serene as a stained glass window, paradoxically capturing the movement of gliding over pavement or water. “ John Sebastian Culqui is a first generation American born in a family from South America that had a strong sense of Catholic dogma and Latin tradition. One can say that John's artistic development comes as a result of these fundamental aspects of his personal life in a Hegelian manner. It is his upbringing that propels this artist to develop his art that reflects and explains his own personality and character.” |
