> DESCRIPTION
This show seeks to bring together a diverse group of artists whose work employs the various devices of mapping. Maps are an important part of human society - they create context, location and boundaries. The routes and boundaries created by maps have widespread historical, political and social implications. Maps and the devices of mapping exist on multiple levels - something which this show seeks to showcase and explore. There is an underlying structure and pattern to the universe which exists on both microcosmic and macrocosmic levels. Microscopic patterns in nature are repeated on a macro level in images reminiscent of aerial maps. Some works are maps of memory, emotion or even the imagination - there are routes which take the viewer back to another time period or even to created cities. Some artists use text as their language for mapping - cities and stories are re-worked and re-mapped, charting and altering personal histories. Visually, humans map thought and images. Even language itself is created through a system of mapping - our brains are maps of neurons and pathways. Some of the artists in this show employ the use of maps conceptually, some use mapping as process, while others employ pattern and structure to create architecturally inspired work. All the work is diagrammatic in nature and the artists are united through their desire for finding a structure to their work and charting a unique course through their own visual language.
