Margo Leavin Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of specific projects by artists William Leavitt, Allen Ruppersberg, and Mungo Thomson. The exhibition will be on view from 14 July through 18 August.
William Leavitt investigates ideas of narrative structure through installation, theatre, sound, and painting. This summer he revisits his 1970 installation, Forest Sound, an artificial “natural” environment in the gallery space. This project was originally a contrary reaction to the minimalist sculpture being made at the time, an “installation of the absurd”, an ambiguous and falsely dramatic environment.
Allen Ruppersberg again addresses the audience’s relationship with art by delving into ideas of creation, collection, and participation. Wondrous Remains will combine photographs, drawings, and silkscreens from past and current projects. The works will be placed on shelves to model possible arrangements in the collector’s home, a prospective modern day “Kunstkammer.”
Mungo Thomson continues his exploration of perception and mass culture with the debut of his new work Skyspace Bouncehouse. A custom-made inflatable “bouncy castle” of the kind popular at children’s parties, Thomson’s bounce house is modeled after artist James Turrell’s “Skyspace” pavilions. Thomson’s playful, portable homage will be sited in the gallery with a view of the changing sky through the skylight.
