Lose (Oneself) In DIKE BLAIR, ALEX SLADE, CHARLOTTA WESTERGREN June 23 – August 4, 2007
Mary Goldman Gallery is pleased to announce a group exhibition of works by Dike Blair, Alex Slade and Charlotta Westergren on view from June 23 through August 4, 2007. An opening reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, June 23, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Lose (oneself) in, features the works of three artists employing different media that explore diverse properties of light and space. Blair’s sculpture, defined by pure rectilinear forms, fuses dichotomous elements of light, dark, mass and void. His configuration of wall mounted and free-standing structures evokes the sensation of spaciousness and containment. Slade’s large-scale photographs of nocturnal landscapes are blanketed in velvety darkness, through which leaves and branches glow in subtle emanations of moonlight. Alternately, Westergren’s oil paintings on silver lamé fabric shimmer in their depiction of reflected sunlight off the surface of the sea.
Dike Blair is a New York based artist whose work has been included in exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Walker Art Center, and the Centre Georges Pompidou. He was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial and recently had a one-person exhibition at Feature Inc. in New York. Again, a collection of his interviews and essays will be published this summer by WhiteWalls, an innovative Chicago based publisher.
Alex Slade is a Los Angeles based artist whose work has exhibited at Atelier als Supermedium, The Netherlands; Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY; California Museum of Photography, University of California Riverside; Santa Monica Museum of Art; Prague Biennial 2003; and San Francisco Art Institute. Slade will be a guest professor at Harvard University for the Fall 2007 semester.
Charlotta Westergren is a Swedish artist based in New York. Exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art Fort Worth, TX; The Knoxville Museum of Art, TN; Groeflin Maag Gallery, Basel, Switzerland; and Galerie Hof & Huyser, Amsterdam. Westergren is a recent recipient of a Camargo Foundation fellowship.
