A superhero (sometimes rendered super-hero or super hero) is a fictional character "of unprecedented physical prowess dedicated to act of derring-do in the public interest". Since the debut of the
prototypical superhero Superman in 1938, stories of superheroes-ranging from brief episodic adventures to continuing years-long sagas-have dominated American comic books and crossed over into other media. The word itself dates to at least 1917. A female superhero is sometimes called a superheroine hrhe (also rendered super-heroine or super heroine).

"Batman" Mixed media by David Limrite

Extraordinary powers and abilities...A strong moral code, including a willingness to risk one's own safety in the service of good without expectation of reward...A motivation, such as a sense of
responsibility... A secret identity ...A distinctive costume...A backstory that explains the circumstances by which the character acquired his or her abilities as well as his or her motivation for becoming a superhero...

"Ertha Kitt as Catwoman" Pastel Painting by German Artist Daggi Wallace

By most definitions, characters need actual superhuman powers to be
deemed superheroes...or do they?

Ralph Massey
Massey's paintings combine unrelated elements juxtaposed in absurd combinations. A melange of nostalgia, love of nature, an admiration for many things antique and well crafted, and my own sense of humor are the
elements. Making things almost but not quite real is my approach. Not
to fool the eye but rather to provoke the mind...

"The Point" by Ralph Massey
" All these artists will inspire, provoke, engage and mesmerize. With
visual perceptions always changing, peek behind the stories told and
you're sure to find the right artistic expression!
