Context is everything. And the contextualization of the body is really all we have left to work with during this neo-gilded age of decadence. Though the physicality of the past has seemingly been pushed out of the way for clicks, twits, and avatars, the infrastructure of context has become the only waypoint in this environment of chaos.
 
Grant Vetter’s work enters the discourse at a point when the abject has lost most of its political capital, trading it for massive online exposure and the trite warning: NSFW. Not that marginalization has disappeared, the corpse of infrastructure still rots in pace with other groups that have lost their symbols. Vetter’s work collapses art, game, and history into the ancient infrastructure of the flesh.
 
And most importantly, there is jouissance in Vetter’s grind—that piece of the abject that cannot be traded away regardless of power, position, pocketbook, or points. It is this piece that contextualizes Vetter’s art into the contemporary deluge to which we, in turn, contextualize our survival.

Grant Vetter is an artist and theorist who lives and works in Southern California. His work has been selected for exhibitions by Lucy Lippard, Edward Lucie-Smith, Kay Saatchi, Kim Abeles, Shelly Bancroft and Peter Nesbett. He is a graduate of EGS where he studied with Alain Badiou, Jacques Rancière, Michael Hardt and Yve-Alain Bois. His first book, Hyperbolic Capitalism: From Postmodernism to the Neobaroque, is forthcoming from Atropos Press.

A catalog of the exhibition, featuring essays by Jacques Ranciere, Christabel Wiebe and Marko Zlomislic, will be available at the gallery.
